Two Arch-Enemies of Opus Dei Meet in the Vatican

On Monday, Francis received Ángel Pérez Pueyo, Bishop of Barbastro-Monzon, who has started a pointless conflict with Opus Dei over the Sanctuary of Torreciudad.

Francis could put an end to this absurd dispute in an instant if he were not behind it. Instead, on 9 October, he appointed a "mediator" to prolong the controversy.

The "mediator" will be another figurehead behind which Francis hides.

The diocese of Barbastro-Monzon distributed the photos of the meeting on its social networks. Ángel Pérez Pueyo has made frequent trips to Rome in recent months.

Opus Dei has been waiting for months for the Vatican to respond to its appeal against Pérez Pueyo's appointment as rector of Torreciudad.

Pérez Pueyo was treated better. It took less than two weeks for Francis to respond to his [or Francis'] request for a "mediator".

In Torreciudad there is also a residential complex called El Tozal, which is closely linked to the spiritual life of Torreciudad and serves as a refuge for the faithful who come to the sanctuary to rest and reflect.

If Opus Dei sees its influence in Torreciudad curtailed, the future of El Tozal is at stake.

The houses in El Tozal are subject to a series of conditions designed to ensure that the spiritual use of the site remains unaltered.

If Torreciudad is disassociated from Opus Dei, the community of faithful that has grown up around the sanctuary could disperse, leaving the Tozal as just another residential area, divorced from its original purpose.

This would also put the future of the people who have built their lives around Torreciudad at risk.
