Francis Cuts Salaries of Curia Cardinals

Francis has ordered the suspension of the payment of the "Gratifica per la Segreteria" and the "indennità di Uffici", which until now have been included in the monthly salaries of the Cardinals of the Curia.

This is stated in a letter sent by the Dicastery for the Economy to those directly concerned.

As a result, the salaries of the Cardinals of the Curia who hold operational positions (about thirty) will be reduced by about 500 euros, in the case of 25 years of service.

The Curia Cardinals earn approximately 5,500 euros per month, including the various benefits they receive.

The Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (Apsa) spends ten million euros a month on the salaries of the more than 4,000 people who work in the Vatican.

The cut for each cardinal is an average of 10% of the salary.
