Child sexual abuse is not a problem unique to the Catholic Church. Paradoxically, the majority of abuse takes place in the family, where between 60 and 70 percent of such assaults are committed. The main culprit is the father ((35.8%)), but also the mother ((30.8 (%)), brothers and sisters ((2%)), other relatives ((4.8%)), or a new partner ((2.1%)).

"Also another 30% of all abuses take place in sporting associations, in choirs, in scouting, and youth associations, where there is close contact between a coach or the choir director and youth."

The percentage of Catholic priests who abuse is very similar to that found in other religious groups. It is estimated that between 2 and 5% of Protestant ministers, Orthodox priests, Jewish rabbis and Islamic teachers, use their position of authority to sexually abuse minors.
