Moskau – Präsident Putin hat General Sergej Surowikin zum Kommandant der „militärischen Spezialoperation“ seiner Truppen in der Ukraine ernannt. Surowikin trägt den Titel „Held Russlands“ und wurde 2017 mit einer Medaille für seinen Einsatz in Syrien ausgezeichnet, wo er als Kommandeur der Luft- und Raumfahrtkräfte die russische Militärexpedition leitete. Seine Ernennung erfolgte am Samstag (8. Oktober) auf die Entlassung zweier hochrangiger russischer Militärkommandeure, nachdem Kiew Gebiete im Nordosten und Süden der Ukraine zurückgewonnen hatte. Mit der teilweisen Zerstörung der Brücke von Kertsch – die wichtigste Verbindung zwischen der Krim und dem russischen Festland – hatte Russland am Wochenende einen weiteren schweren Schlag erlitten. Mit dem heutigen Angriff auf die Ukraine hat Surowikin seine Handschrift hinterlassen.
Laut der Jamestown Foundation, einer US-amerikanischen Organisation, die sich der Information der Verteidigungspolitik verschrieben hat, ist Surowikin im russischen Militär für seine „völlige Skrupellosigkeit“ bekannt.
Er „war bereits 1991 am kurzlebigen gescheiterten Putsch des sowjetischen Geheimdienstes KGB gegen Reformpräsident Michail Gorbatschow beteiligt und schlug als Schützenkommandant Proteste dagegen nieder, indem er eine Straßenbarrikade samt den Menschen darauf niederwalzen ließ – ‚der einzige Offizier, der im August 1991 Schießbefehl erteilte und tatsächlich drei Menschen tötete‘, schrieb der Moskauer Politologe Grigorij Judin auf Twitter.

His appointment came on Saturday (8 October) following the dismissal of two senior Russian military commanders after Kiev reclaimed territory in northeastern and southern Ukraine. Russia had suffered another major blow at the weekend with the partial destruction of the Kerch Bridge - the main link between Crimea and the Russian mainland. With today's attack on Ukraine, Surovikin has left his mark.

In a rare public statement, Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the mercenary group Wagner, was quoted by the news agency Live24. The latter had called Surovikin a "legendary person". He was "the most competent commander in the Russian army".
