“When I first met Christians, I thought that Christianity was a very, very hard thing for me to digest. I began hating them like anything. Whenever I met Christians, I beat them, I scolded them, I seized their Scriptures, Bibles and so on … We went to a village, where Christianity was practiced. We made a cross, and tied the pastor to it. We beat him, like it was done in the Bible; you know, Christ’s Passion – we did the same.” - Taw Tagar
Arunachal Pradesh - in Sanskrit “Land of the Rising Sun”- is a mountainous area in the extreme northeastern part of India, occupying almost 84 thousands square kilometers and incorporating major ranges of the Himalaya foothills. Twenty major scheduled tribes of about a million people inhabit the state. Some practice Hinduism and Tibetan Buddhism but most tribes practice local religions that involve interacting with a variety of natural spirits and deities. In 1978, India’s nationalist Hindu India’s People Party, the BJP, introduced the Freedom of Religion Act – legislation essentially aimed at discouraging any Christian presence. No Christians were allowed to set foot in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. No priest could enter this land. Today Arunachal Pradesh still numbers amongst India’s seven states where anti-conversion laws continue to be in force, though about a quarter of a million of Arunachal Pradesh’s population is now Christian. This is the story of this extraordinary missionary work.
