American Messianism and Jehu.
Chesterton commented that our nation is the only one founded on a creed. Many believe this nation to be a force of moral good, a ‘city on a hill’ and God’s chosen instrument to bring our benefits to the world. In this country, the monolithic state likens itself to a religion and relegates the worship of God to a private affair. As Catholics, we know that it is only the One True Church which brings true spiritual enlightenment, supernatural grace, and salvation. Our love for our country is natural and good, but we don’t have to love the ideology of American ‘messianism.’ Having made this correction and clarification, we also ought to readily acknowledge that God does indeed use secular states and rulers in His Divine Providence, both for good and ill. Many have likened our president to Cyrus who ended the Israelite’s exile; yet one year after his election, it seems Jehu is a far more appropriate biblical analogy.
