Record Meeting: Pope Francis Meets German President and Trump Hater

On October 9 Pope Francis met for 55 minutes with the German President Frank Walter Steinmeier, a socialist and active Protestant, in the private library of the Apostolic Palace. This was the longest meeting Francis ever had with a politician.

In 2016 Steinmeier described Donald Trump as a "hate preacher" and refused to congratulate him after his election.
