I seem to remember that immediately after lighting the candles, using both hands, we would slide the handle of the candle-lighter down so that we could, unceremoniously yet in a dignified manner, reach and blow the fire out. This was done at the foot of the altar. It's not a major point but it does seem to be a bit safer than carrying the fire to another location.

I seem to remember that immediately after lighting the candles, using both hands, we would slide the handle of the candle-lighter down so that we could, unceremoniously yet in a dignified manner, reach and blow the fire out. This was done at the foot of the altar. It's not a major point but it does seem to be a bit safer than carrying the fire to another location.

Then we were given new candle-lighters. This allowed us to pull a level at the end of the handle which retracted the lit fire wick and thereby put the fire out automatically.
