Eastern Orthodoxy, Chalcedon and the Principle of Unity

By Dr. Rafael Xavier Gonzalez
There was a recent debate between

The question was if the Eastern Orthodox church is the “One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church”, the four marks of the Church established by the Council of Nicaea (325 AD), from the Nicene Creed, and affirmed and further developed by the First Council of Constantinople (381 AD). These marks are the essential characteristics of the Church as founded by Jesus Christ Our Lord.
The problem is that in the history of the Church, the Roman Catholic Church, the same concrete claims of disunity can be applied to it, like the great schisms, Avignon and the Western Schism come to mind. Disunity existed on the surface while the true Church remained united in a more profound sense that transcends the mere concrete events in history (in another article I will address the meaning of the mark of …

Two Forgotten Essential Catholic Doctrines: Deification and Satisfaction

Dr. Rafael Xavier Gonzalez
There’s little doubt that the two beliefs that make Catholicism Catholicism are the substantial presence (not just
But there are two not so obvious essential Catholic beliefs that need to be stressed in our day because they have been almost forgotten it seems, namely,
Human nature has what is called
Thomistic philosophical concept that refers to our capacity or receptiveness to divine grace or supernatural influence. We have the capacity for the Divine,
There must be no confusion. The natural realm and the supernatural one, both being good and from God, have an (quasi) infinite gap between them regarding their value. For that reason, the difference is abysmal between a baptized person in the state of grace and an unbaptized person. Because Catholicism is profoundly synthetical, harmonizing apparent contradictory positions, defending a position over its contrary, even a heretical one, can lead to heresy itself (Though I do not agree with all the points, the book

A clear example of the above is Eutyches, thinking that he was defending the orthodoxy of Cyril, opposed Nestorianism in an extreme manner, namely, affirming

Oh yes, let us not react! That would be…reactionary! That’s bad, you know! What we must do is not react. “We must join with Sauron! It would be wise, my friend.” Let us pay no mind to St. Pius X who counseled us not to watch evil advance while doing nothing. Did not God put us here in this particular time precisely so that we would be reactionary to the evils unleashed in the Church and world by Vatican II? Which lord does one serve then, who counsels us not to be reactionary???
