St Peter's Chantry in Burford.

I am fascinated by chantry chapels: those structures with an altar, forming a chapel within a larger church building, in which religious guilds or individuals paid a priest to offer the Holy Mass for the souls of the deceased, that they might be released from Purgatory. Chantry chapels were a major part of the medieval Church; indeed All Souls' College in Oxford was a chantry college. Many such foundations were dismantled after the Reformation, labelled a popish superstition. This beautiful 15th-century chantry in Burford parish church is dedicated to St Peter and is a rare survival of a wooden chantry chapel, which was the norm in parish churches throughout the country. It survived as it was used as a box pew by the owners of Burford Priory. It was restored in 1877-8 by Street. This chantry evokes for me all that I love about medieval religion - the colour, intimacy and beauty of the Catholic Faith.
