ABSTRACT OF THE CATECHISM OF PERSEVERANCE by Mgr Jean-Joseph GAUME - FIRST PART Containing the history and explanation of religion from the beginning of the World until the coming of the Messiah.

16th LESSON - Fall of man.

What punishment did God threaten our first parents with?
The punishment with which God had threatened our first parents was death of body and soul. He told them: The day you eat the forbidden fruit you will die.

How did the devil tempt our first parents?
The demon, in the form of the serpent, deceives the woman by telling her that, if they ate the forbidden fruit, they would become like gods. The deceived wife ate some, and offered some to her husband. Adam was not deceived; but, out of kindness for his wife, he also ate of the forbidden fruit.

What state were they in after their fall?
After their fall, remorse and shame took possession of their conscience, and they ran to hide among the trees of the garden.

What punishment did God pronounce on the serpent?
God condemned the serpent to crawl on the earth and eat the dust, in order to show us how odious the devil is to him, by punishing the one who had been the instrument of his crime.

What sentence did he pronounce against our first parents?
He condemned woman to bear children in pain and to be subject to man, and man to eat his bread by the sweat of his brow.

How did God comfort Adam and Eve?
God consoles them by promising them a Savior, who would restore to them all the goods they had lost and even greater ones.

Did Adam do penance?
Adam did penance for his sin, and he had the happiness of recovering the good graces of God and dying in his love.

I resolve to love God above all things, and my neighbor as myself for the love of God; and, as a testimony to this love, I will reject temptation as soon as I realize it.
