Chaos Management: Bishop Berzosa Returns to Spain

From 2011 to 2018, Monsignor Raúl Berzosa headed the diocese of Ciudad Rodrigo in Spain.

He is the brother of Sister Verónica, founder of Iesu Communio, a very successful community of sisters.

Monsignor Berzosa left his diocese in June 2018 for a "period of reflection and spiritual renewal", following an incident with a woman.

He spent time in a Benedictine monastery in France, in Colombia and in Rome. In October 2020, Francis sent Berzosa to the archdiocese of Santo Domingo as a "missionary bishop" (sic). In August 2023, he was appointed territorial episcopal vicar of Santo Domingo.

But less than two months later, in September 2023, someone else was appointed to the same position.

The Archbishop of Santo Domingo affirmed that the Holy See had informed him of a "new mission" for the "beloved missionary bishop".

After that nothing happened. Some Spanish digital media claimed at the end of August that the Holy See didn't want Monsignor Berzosa to return to Spain.

Today, InfoVaticana.com (6 February) published quotes from a farewell letter from Berzosa: "Confidentially and in total secrecy, I inform you that I am leaving for Spain on 21 February." He writes that he had a "very happy" time in the Dominican Republic.

InfoVaticana.com has heard that Monsignor Berzosa could take up a post within the Spanish Bishops' Conference.

But in times of synodality and shared responsibility, everything is clouded in mystery...
