This year marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of Pope Pius XI's encyclical Quas Primas that established the Feast of the Christ the King. In this entry, we quote the paragraph (24) that best explains why the pope believed it was necessary to recognize this celebration in the Church. (Note: we have divided into two parts.) Pope Pius writes, "We firmly hope, however, that the feast of the Kingship of Christ, which in future will be yearly observed, may hasten the return of society to our loving Savior. It would be the duty of Catholics to do all they can to bring about this happy result."
