Denmark Apologises to Women over Involuntary Birth Control
The campaign was exposed in 2022. Records revealed that approximately 4,500 women and girls, some as young as 13, had been fitted with intrauterine devices without their knowledge or consent.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said: 'We cannot change what happened, but we can take responsibility. On behalf of Denmark, I apologise.”
Lawsuits have been filed by affected women, now in their 70s and 80s, seeking compensation. Denmark says it will decide on compensation after an investigation, which is expected to conclude next month.
