Qaddafi Guilty of Islamic Proselitism

Italy

A visit to Italy by the Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi has sparked criticism. They have objected to Qaddafi’s staged plea for Italians to convert to Islam. Upon arriving in Rome on August 30, Qaddafi distributed copies of the Qu’ran to a group of women. They had been recruited to meet him at the airport. Qaddafi delivered an address encouraging them to consider Islam. Rocco Buttiglione, a leader of the Christian Democratic party, commented that a Christian leader would never be allowed to make a similar appeal in a predominantly Muslim country.

New Cardinals Soon?

Vatican

French Cardinal Paul Poupard has celebrated his 80th birthday on August 30. He is the former president of the Pontifical Council for Culture. Having turned 80 Poupard became ineligible to participate in a future papal conclave. There are now 106 cardinals who are qualified to vote in a papal election. Three more cardinals will turn 80 in September. By November 15, the number of cardinals qualified to join in the deliberations of a papal conclave will be 101. With the maximum number of cardinal-electors set at 120, expectations are steadily mounting that Pope Benedict XVI will soon call a consistory to name new cardinals.

No Termination – But Murder

Argentina

In a recent message, Bishop Jorge Luis Lona from San Luis in Argentina criticized the country's officials for promoting abortion by describing the procedure as a “termination of pregnancy.” “The shocking word ‘murder’ will not be used. It will be said that it is only a ‘pregnancy termination,’ but lives will be definitively interrupted,” the bishop explained. The bishop also denounced the discrimination against children who are denied the right to a father and a mother. He said: “This is a global effort whose central nucleus is undoubtedly bound to some sectors of the United Nations.

Emergency Plan For Papal Visit

Scotland

Hospitals in Scotland will be prepared for an emergency during the September visit by Pope Benedict XVI. The alert seems to be nothing a matter of thorough advance planning by organizers for the papal trip. Pope Benedict is 83, and has some history of heart problems. Organizers have apparently taken steps to ensure that in case of an emergency, there will be a plan in place. There is no indication that the planning invokes any new concerns about the Holy Father's health.
