Douay-Rheims Original and Challoner Side-By-Side >
This is of great interest to me. - I'll share it.
The two Douay Rheim's Bibles (Old & adj) A side by side comparison of each chapter of the Book of the Apocalypse
First column shows the text from the Original 1570 Douay Rheims - Second Column gives you what is being sold today as the Douay R. - which is not - it is an 18th century D/R amended by Bishop Challoner.
It is clear that the text hasn't been "modernised" or "brought up to date" in fact the "modernised" text in the Challoner version seems less up to date than the original - they should only have removed the old f's and esses - it reads excellently when those are modernised.
Some words of the original text have been altered.
Why is the Bishop Challoner Douay Rheims marketed today as though it were indeed the original?
People who want to buy the original Douay, can only do so - if they are prepared to buy a hard-bound scanned copy from a company called "Church Latin" online.
Why is the original Douay Rheims out of print?
