Endangered Sanctuary Generates 97 Million Euros a Year
The sanctuary is one of the most visited places in Aragon. It generates 97 million euros a year for the province, according to a study carried out by the Huesca Chamber of Commerce.
The economic impact assessment was based on a survey of visitors to the sanctuary, with 3,382 responses, making the study highly reliable.
The direct impact was estimated at 58.2 million euros, based on the expenditure on the various services of the average annual pilgrim, estimated at 180,900 visitors, as a starting point for the study.
82% of visitors stay overnight in the area, with an average stay of 4.4 days, and there is a tendency to repeat other trips (other than to Torreciudad) in the province.
If Bishop 'Angel Pérez Pueyo of Balbastro-Monzón succeeds in destroying the sanctuary, around 150,000 visitors will disappear from the region.
