Après une fête accordée en 1683 par Sa Sainteté le Pape Innocent XI en action de grâce, Sa Sainteté le Pape Innocent XIII voulu perpétuer la mémoire d’un tel bienfait en ordonnant que cette fête soit célébrée chaque année dans l’Église universelle en 1721. Le Pape Saint Pie X fixa la fête au 12 septembre lors de la réforme du Bréviaire romain.
