The Catholic Church celebrates the feasts of the Miraculous Medal and Saint Catherine Laboure on November 27 and 28. It was Saint Catherine Laboure who first received this devotion in 1830. Both the front and back of the Miraculous Medal are rich in symbolism. Knowing the meaning behind the Miraculous Medal makes wearing one even more special. Front of the Medal 1. Prayer "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!" 2. Rays Through her intercession, she sends God’s grace to the world. 3. Feet on Globe and Serpent The globe represents the world and the serpent is Satan. Mary helps the world fight against evil. 4. The Year 1830 The Blessed Mother gave Saint Catherine Laboure the design of the Miraculous Medal in 1830. Reverse Side of the Medal 5. Twelve Stars There are twelve Apostles, representing the Church. 6. Letter "M" with the Cross The "M" of Mary and the Cross of her son, Jesus Christ, are intertwined, representing their union. 7. Two Flaming Hearts The …More

" . . .accept your weaknesses and offer them up to God, Who loves you. When we are weak, it is precisely in our weakness that God loves us, in order that He may communicate to us His strength, then He will love us as strong men. Notice that this acceptance of our weakness is a great strength, because it is the most genuine form of humility. 'He that shall humble himself shall be exalted.' We arise from our weakness when we say: 'My God, I accept it, and I offer it to you, because it is all I have. When you give me more, then I shall offer you more.'" (A Carthusian)

Mary Joseph Calore on fb: "With broken hearts, we must share the terrible news that our dear Sister Augustine Marie Molnar went unexpectedly into eternal life yesterday, November 18, 2023 at 9:33AM in a car accident in Jefferson Township, Berks County, PA as Sister was traveling to promote vocations. Sister Augustine Marie was a prayerful, sacrificial and hardworking Sacred Heart Sister who used her many gifts for the glory of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We pray for her eternal repose and we also ask the Lord for strength and consolation for Sister Augustine Marie's family and friends and religious Sisters who dearly love her."

When Saint Bruno retired to the Chartreuse desert, with six companions, four of them lived always in cell, while the other two also took care of works outside. They were the Order's first converse Brothers. In a similar way, there are among nuns different ways of consecrating their lives to God in the solitude of the Charterhouse: - Cloister nuns stay in their cell for the most part of the day, devoted to prayer, study and work. - Converse nuns lead an authentic solitary life, and, besides prayer and study, devote a large part of their time to work in the monastery outside their cells. Cloister nuns and converse nuns share, under complementary forms, the responsibility of the mission that concerns Carthusian Communities: to make possible the existence of a family of solitaires, within the Church's boson - Are there any other differences? - There aren't because Vatican Council II eliminated all those differences that were not essential to Carthusian vocation which is basically the same one. …More

But this response will be put to the test: sometimes by tough fights, but especially by a small, persistent struggle somewhat wearying. Living an interior life is not easy. It involves a learning process. The nun, like any human being, carries in her energies that are only waiting to be used. These energies carry her outwards. Her hands need to do something, her eyes to see, her mind to deal with thoughts and readings, her imagination to pursue dreams, her will to stray into the multiplicity of her desires. In the presence of these aspirations that go in all directions, the temptation can be great to satisfy them by means of compensation of all kinds. In reality, we have to accept this experience of emptiness. This is the decisive test. It will often present itself in the face of humble and concrete renunciations: the daily rhythm of life includes its trials, its annoyances. The cell, which appeared large in the early days, may appear to be shrinking. Desires for space, travel, can awaken …More

This is a photo of a Carthusian nun. The Carthusians are among the strictest -if not the strictest- religious monastic Orders of the Church. Compared to the Carthusian monks ( 300 members today, 620 before Vatican II), the Carthusian nuns were never huge in numbers...perhaps 300 at their peak. Before Vatican II, there were about 190. Today unfortunatly, there are only about 70. But they do get vocations ! So do the monks. It's hard to believe, that before the protestant Reformation, there were about 250-300 Carthusian monasteries in Europe, and about 5,000 monks. Though the Order lost many houses during the Reformation, the rebounded somewhat, but had over 200 houses closed during the French Revolution, and then the period of rule of the corrupt, and basically atheist rule of the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Joseph II (patron of Mozart, portrayed so well in the movie "Amadeus (1984). He hated monastic life, because he thought they served no useful purpose, so he closed ALL the cloistered/…More
