Martínez Trial Becomes a Trial Against the Vatican

"The judge is making it difficult for me to defend myself," writes José María Martínez, a Spanish member of Opus Dei who has been falsely accused of "abuses", on JoseMariaMartinezGaztelueta.com (5 March).

Since Francis couldn't find a regular judge willing to take part in the kangaroo court against Martínez, he appointed a "special tribunal" - an injustice in itself - with Monsignor José Antonio Satué, Bishop of Teruel, Spain, as judge.

In order to defend himself, Martínez must have access to the file on his case prepared by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

This file is the result of an investigation commissioned by Francis in 2015, which concluded that Martínez was innocent.

Against the principles of serious jurisprudence, the Vatican refused to release the file without communicating to Martínez the reason for this.

It gets worse: The two priests, Silverio Nieto and Rafael Felipe Freije, who carried out the investigation of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith that confirmed Martínez's innocence, will not be allowed to testify in the second canonical trial.

Nieto and Freije were among the first people to have access to the accuser's claims. They were the people chosen by the Church to carry out the process.

The second trial against Martínez wanted by Francis is illegal because it disregards the fundamental legal principle which prohibits a second trial on the same or similar charges after an acquittal.

All these deplorable facts indicate that the verdict against Martínez has been predetermined.

The judge, Monsignor Satué, officially confirmed his bias already before the trial began, when he sent Martínez a letter on 26 September asking him to "apologise" to the accuser Juan Cuatrecasas, a former pupil of the Opus Dei school in Gaztelueta.
