Drugs, the closing of mental institutions, and the high cost of housing are the primary reasons why this is occurring.
emphasis on Drugs and closing of mental institutions. I will say, that I have tried help many homeless people over the years...and get to know their stories and histories. And they fear the psych ward and refuse treatment knowing they may be admitted. After working as a music therapist IN a psych ward for a couple years, I completely understand why: you may be 'admitted" for a short time, but if a psychiatrist deems you to be a risk---either drugs, alcohol or depression--you are fast tracked for a "guardian". This population is vulnerable because there are usually no qualified family members to be a guardian, and so, the court appoints one of those guardians for hire. That means, once you have a guardian, (or conservatorship), you lose all rights..you can clean up, get the help, but like Hotel California, you get in, but you NEVER GET OUT..... the guardian is paid remember. I worked with two lovely women in their 50's who were long sober, but will never leave the psych ward because of a court appt guardian who has no interest in them, and has many others they are getting paid to keep there. It was heartbreaking. There has to be a better system.
