Hey, am not convinced of the Historicity of the term 'Tridentine' and therefore of its use to describe the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (or EF).
1. It philologically belongs to the Missal of 1570 promulgated by Pope St. Pius V in that year.
2. It is a derivative of the noun 'Trent' the place in Northern Italy where the Council of Trent was held.

Hey, am not convinced of the Historicity of the term 'Tridentine' and therefore of its use to describe the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (or EF).

2. It is a derivative of the noun 'Trent' the place in Northern Italy where the Council of Trent was held.
3. There is only one Roman Rite. Therefore, to use the adjective "Tridentine" joined with the noun "Rite" = Tridentine Rite, is to set up a dichotomy between the 1570 Missal and anything that developed after this, e.g. the Missal of Bl John XXIII (1962) or the 1970/2002 Missal of John Paul II.
4. On close inspection of the 1570 Missale Romanum and the Pontificale Romanum of that year, and compare them to the 1962 versions, one will find the structure more-or-less in tact, but the Theology quite different indeed (one just has to consider the restored Triduum Sacrum in the 1962 Missal!)
Therefore, for these reasons I challenge the term "Tridentine Rite" in all contexts of usage other than that of the 1570 Missal. Maybe someone might have more convincing arguments for this term which I have not yet had the pleasure of reading - do share them with me. Maybe I might learn something of the 'why' this term is allowed to be used so widely.
