Leo XIV Received Conservative Cardinal Cipriani

Leo XIV received Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani, 81, the emeritus archbishop of Lima, Peru, in an audience today, the Vatican Press Office announced.

Cardinal Cipriani was one of few conservative bishops to have a positive, real effect on his diocese during his tenure (1999–2019). Pope Francis retired him in January 2019, immediately after his 75 birthday.

He replaced him by the pro-homosexual Pachamama-Archbishop Carlos Castillo, who exploited his position to commit liturgical abuses and engage in financial irregularities.

Leo XIV's audience comes at a sensitive time. Cardinal Cipriani has been under Vatican disciplinary sanctions since 2019 following allegations of homosexual abuse committed in the 1980s. He firmly denies the accusations by a single witness. No formal canonical trial was opened.

The Peruvian Bishops’ Conference supported the sanctions. Cardinal Cipriani calls them “unjust”.

According to InfoVaticana.com, there was - historically - a tense relationship between Cardinal Cipriani and Peruvian Bishop Robert Prevost at the time: "Various sources indicate that, in Peru, they represented opposing visions of the Church."
