Duty To Kill: Even the ultraliberal Cardinal Vincent Nichols of Westminster, London, is opposing the legalisation of assisted suicide. Sunday he said during a homilie in Lourdes, France: “It is a great lie to try and convince people that life lived with serious illness is not worth living.” He added: “The right to die is somebody else’s duty to kill.”
Progressiv Authoritarism: In an article for firstthings.com, Catholic author George Weigel has warned of progressiv Catholic authoritarianism. According to him, the problem is especially grave in Catholic higher education in the U. S. He states that it is impossible for a young scholar, no matter how talented, to get a tenure-track position in certain prestigious Catholic universities, if he criticizes artifical birth-control, defends marriage, holds the Church teaching that women cannot be priests or that homosexual inclinations are a sign of spiritual disturbance.
Murdered: 65-year-old Sister Odette Dos Anjos was murdered last Friday in Guaratinguetà, Brazil. She belonged to the Franciscan Sisters of Siessen, a congregation originally from Germany. Sister Odette worked in the Fazenda da Esperança which offers spiritual therapy for drug addicts. Her killer was a 53-year-old man who, coming from outside, stabbed her eight times in the back. He was looking for money.
A Huge Temptation: Bishop Pankraty, abbot of the famous Russian-Orthodox Valaam Transfiguration Monastery, has declared that the Internet is one of the biggest challenges to monks now. Quote: “All these smartphones, large screens are a huge temptation, especially to young monks.” Pankraty said that monks leave the secular world and smartphones bring them back to it, adding that the problem now exists everywhere, even on Mount Athos.
