Dai canoni sul sacramento dell'ordine del Concilio di Trento: "Can.2 If anyone says that besides the priesthood there are in the Catholic Church no other orders, both major and minor, by which as by certain grades, there is an advance in the priesthood: let him be anatema". (Si veda il punto 958 del Denzinger in cui il Concilio si esprime sui sette ordini minori sempre esistiti nella Chiesa).

"As by certain grades" dá seri dubbi sulla legittimità di quanto fatto da Paolo VI nel 1972 con la lettera apostolica del 15 agosto o presunta tale "Ministeria quidam" in cui si eliminano tutti gli ordini minori, tranne il diaconato, e la tonsura.
