Nicaragua: Crack Down on the Church

To date, some 151 Nicaraguan priests and 76 nuns have been banished, forced into exile, or prevented from entering the country (Confidencial.digital, 6 December). The government is also taking control of religious activities by replacing the Church in organising Catholic processions and celebrations.

President Daniel Ortega has branded priests, bishops, cardinals, and Francis a "mafia". Matagalpa Bishop Rolando Álvarez has been in prison since August 2022. He was sentenced (below) to 26 years in prison in February 2023 after refusing to be deported to the United States.
