No God: Priest on Trial for Homily

Father Bolmax Pereira of St Francis Xavier’s in Chicalim, Goa, in a sermon praised the heroism of a 17th century king, Chatrapathi Shivaji Maharaj, a national hero in India. But Pereira reminded people that he was “not a god”. Shivaji is considered by some Hindus to be an incarnation of Shiva. The homily went viral on social media and led to a campaign of harassment against the priest by some Hindus. Pereira was charged with insulting a religion and causing public disorder, arrested, fined, and is now awaiting trial.
