Vatican: Francis Wanted to "Get Some Air" and "Spontaneously Decided to Visit Basilica"

The Vatican press office is presenting Pope Francis' public appearance on Thursday—dressed in a white undershirt, black trousers, and a blanket draped over his shoulders—as a sign of his "ongoing recovery".

In a statement on Friday afternoon, the Holy See reported the truism that Francis had largely remained out of the public eye since being discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital three weeks ago.

According to the update, Francis "simply wanted to get some air" and then "spontaneously decided to extend his time away from his Vatican residence by visiting the Basilica."

The Holy See also confirmed that Francis continues to receive supplemental oxygen, particularly at night, though he is now able to go without it for "longer periods."

This marked Francis' third appearance this week, following the release of photos with King Charles on Wednesday and a brief greeting to pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday.
