Leo XIV’s Promoted Bishop Will Spell Disaster for Málaga

On 13 September, Monsignor José Antonio Satué Huerto officially assumed his new role as Bishop of Málaga.

He has been Bishop of Teruel since 2021, and was promoted to Málaga by Pope Leo XIV on 27 June.

Monsignor Satué had a history as an anti-Catholic prelate. As vicar general, he openly rebelled against his own bishop, even taking him to a failed canonical trial.

Known as Francis' man in Spain, he has strongly backed controversial initiatives such as Fiducia Supplicans and the homosexual agenda, while attacking Catholic websites critical of the Pope. His credibility collapsed after the Gaztelueta case, in which he was accused of excluding key evidence from an abuse trial against a seemingly innocent teacher. Nevertheless, he continued to gain more power under Francis.

During Monsignor Satué's tenure in Teruel, only one seminarian joined, and he came from another diocese.

Inauguration in Málaga: Synodality and 'Social Justice'

The ceremony in the Cathedral on Saturday was attended by more than 25 bishops.

During his homily, Monsignor Satué addressed the themes of synodality, care for creation, and the denunciation of injustices.

InfoVaticana.com commented that the new bishop delivered a kind of sociological discourse: "This style fits in with the progressive sector that, in recent years, has shaped the direction of the Church in Spain under Francis's pontificate: a horizontal language with plenty of social references, but less focused on the fundamental mysteries of the Faith."
