Salamanca's most famous residential building is undoubtedly the 'Casa de las Conches', or House of Shells. The facade of the building is covered with over 300 shells, the symbol of St James. It was also the heraldic device of the Knights of the Order of Santiago, and the person who had this house built, Don Rodrigo Maldonado de Talavera, was a member of this Order. The house was built between 1493 - 1517.
