Anti-Abortion Party: Woman with Down Syndrome Enters Politics

Mar Galcerán, 45, has been a member of the unicameral legislature of the Valencian Community (Corts Valencianes) since 14 September 2023.

She is the first Spanish regional councillor with Down's syndrome and a member of the 'Christian Democratic' Partido Popular, which is in theory against abortion, while the 'left' parties are all openly in favour of aborting human beings like Mrs Galcerán.

Mrs Galcerán joined the People's Party at the age of 18, citing the party's "embrace of tradition".

She spent many years as a civil servant, including 13 years as an intern to the President of the Generalitat Valenciana and four years with Asindown, a Valencian organisation that helps families with children with Down's syndrome.

Galcerán was placed 20th on the list of the Partido Popular for the 2023 Valencian regional elections, one seat short of a seat in the Corts Valencianes.

However, following the appointment of Ernesto Fernández Pardo as director general of the Entidad Valenciana de Vivienda y Suelo, Galcerán joined the Corts on 14 September 2023.

According to Down España, Galcerán may be the first person with Down syndrome to serve in a European regional parliament.

Ángela Covadonga Bachiller is another Spanish woman with Down syndrome who is involved in politics. She is a councillor in the city of Valladolid and, of course, a member of the same Partido Popular.

Ms Covadonga became Spain's first city councillor with Down syndrome when she was sworn in on 29 July 2013.
