The newest front in the battle over marriage
Illinois is now “ground zero” in the ongoing battle to preserve traditional marriage.
On May 30, 2012, the American Civil Liberties Union and Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc., filed separate lawsuits in the Cook County Circuit Court (which includes the City of Chicago) on behalf of a number of same-sex couples challenging the Illinois law that reserves marriage to opposite-sex couples (Illinois does, however, already recognize same-sex civil unions).
The lawsuits, which raise only state, not federal, constitutional claims, name a single defendant, David Orr, the Cook County Clerk, who has the responsibility and duty of issuing marriage licenses and registering the solemnization of marriages after they have been performed.
Mr. Orr, a longtime advocate of same-sex marriage, has announced his support for the plaintiffs’ lawsuits, has expressed his opinion that the failure to recognize same-sex relationships as marriages is unconstitutional …More

I like FR's comments. Society not only has a right to define who we are as a people, we have an obligation to do so.

A very telling passage:

“The fact that advocates of same-sex marriage uniformly oppose public votes on state constitutional amendments that would define marriage as a union of a man and a woman is telling evidence that they do not believe what they say. If advocates of same-sex marriage believe that the people of Illinois are now prepared to accept same-sex marriage, let’s have the General Assembly put the issue on the November ballot and we’ll see who wins. Same-sex marriage should not come in the back door, via an arguably collusive lawsuit in which no one charged with the responsibility of enforcing the law actually defends it.”

I have thought for a long time that our side plays too much defense and not enough offense.

I've thought the same thing. Those of us who celebrate and respect traditional morality rarely attack the tearing down of that morality in courts. The constant attacks on traditional marriage have made an impression on the public and a majority (in polls, at least) claim that they support it. Well, until they get to vote for it, that is.

Its long past time to loudly condemn the absurd concept of 'same-sex marriage' for the absolutely repugnant ploy it really is: an attempt to 'normalize' homosexual behavior. Although advocates of same-sex 'marriage' pretend that they just want to be 'included', they know - or should know - that by diluting the legal concept of what marriage is you effectively weaken the very bedrock of society.

As it is, (traditional) marriage is in steep decline with many couples opting for co-habitation instead of marriage and the divorce rate remains alarmingly high. American society long ago abandoned many traditional moral guideposts, much to our loss, and allowing advocates of 'same-sex marriage' to keep swinging a hammer to the marriage structure while we just keep trying to hold the fort, as it were, is a losing proposition.

As previously noted, we need to call out the judges and politicians that wring their hands and pretend that opposing same-sex 'marriage' is a great affront to the human rights of those individuals in a homosexual relationship. We need never apologize for defending what is right and opposing what is clearly wrong, no matter how many politicians, celebrities and judges say otherwise. God is not mocked.
