Today, 5 August, we recall the dedication of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, the first church dedicated to the Virgin Mary after the Council of Ephesus which called Our Lady 'Theotokos', meaning Bearer of God. This was to affirm the full divinity of Christ in one Person, for some were saying that Mary was just Mother of the human 'side' of Jesus. This 15th-century statue of 'St Mary the Great' is enshrined in the reredos behind the High Altar of Burgos Cathedral; she is patroness of the city.
