Catholic Charles Carroll's Fight Against Discrimination in Early America
Charles Carroll of Carrollton was born in Annapolis in 1737. A brilliant defender of the Catholic faith who was styled "first citizen," he played a major role in the birth of the young United States. Carroll also worked persistently to establish the concept of religious toleration for "we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. Author of "Charles Carroll of Carrollton: Faithful Revolutionary," Scott McDermott, joins to share how Carroll overcame the discrimination of his time as Roman Catholics were barred from participation in public affairs in Maryland and many other colonies during the time of the American Revolution. McDermott explains how Carroll helped convince people that Catholics could be good citizens. He tells us how Carroll's Catholic faith played a major role in his political philosophy. ------------ EWTN News
