Seine Erziehung genoss er im irisch-schottischen Reich Dalriada. Dort wurde er von Mönchen des Klosters Iona erzogen und getauft. Ebenso wurde Oswald in der Kriegskunst ausgebildet. So nahm er bereits als junger Mann an Feldzügen in Irland teil. Erst 634 kehrte Oswald mit seinem christlichen Heer in die Heimat zurück. Siegreich hatte er die Reiche Bernicia und Deira zum Königreich von Northumbria vereinigt. Als König sorgte er für die Fortführung der Christianisierung. Zur Missionierung der Bevölkerung holte er die Mönche des iro-schottischen Klosters Iona, das er seit Kindertagen kannte. 635 gründete er das Kloster Lindisfarne als Missionszentrum für sein Reich. Nach dessen Tod gründete Haziga ein Kloster der Benediktiner in Bayrischzell, das anfangs nur aus einer von zwei Edelleuten bewohnten Einsiedelei bestand; schon 1077 konnte dort die Margarethenkirche geweiht werden. 1085 wurde das Kloster an die Stelle der heutigen Martinskirche nach Fischbachau bei Miesbach verlegt und mit zwölf Priestermönchen und ebenso vielen Laienbrüdern aus Hirsau besiedelt.
