882-Year-Old Abbey in Ireland Closes - Immigrants Take Over
They will be merged into one community, initially based at Mount Saint Joseph Abbey in Roscrea. The future monastery will seek another location and will be called Our Lady of Silence. It begins with twenty-six members, three of whom are novices.
The decision to close the monasteries was made because of the decline in vocations and the aging of the communities. It was approved by the Cistercian Order on November 22.
The Cistercians were first established in Ireland in 1142 on the initiative of St Malachy, Archbishop of Armagh. He became friends with St Bernard of Clairveuax. The first monastery in Ireland was Mellifont Abbey.
At the time of the Reformation and the dissolution of the monasteries, there were 43 houses of Cistercian monks and three of nuns.
At present the Cistercians still have six monasteries in Ireland, including one of nuns. Three male communities will merge into the one "Our Lady of Silence" and the remaining two, the Abbeys of Moone and at Portglenone, will continue as autonomous communities.
Irish media report that Mellifont Abbey will be used for 300 illegal immigrants after it closes in January. The Abbey is located in the tiny village of Collon, with a population of just 864.
