Cardinal Schönborn’s Mother Dead at 102
Born Freiin von Doblhof, Eleonore had a “wonderful” youth in Moravia, but her father died early. She meets the painter Hugo-Damian Schönborn at a party around her 22nd birthday. On their third date, he asked her to marry him.
Schönborn became a soldier in Stalingrad and deserted to England. At the end of the war, Eleonore had to leave the family castle within one hour. Her Christoph was born a few months earlier. She came to Austria where her marriage turned into a disaster. The couple divorced in 1958 which left deep scars on her children.
She remade her life, became a secretary, build a house, was involved in the parish. At the end, she went almost completely blind.
