I concur, even in this courant Moyen Age , the British Bishops still continue to pander to devient clerics AND to almost every whim of the people. I suspect this is no different in many of the other RC Sees out there....

On the other hand, a Bishop these days needs to be a politician. BUT, I maintain, that he must be a CHRISTIAN politician (not like the Borgia and Mancini Popes of old, or John Bell of Westminster in 1580!). Therefore, His Emminence is skating on rather thin ice; I quite expect a fall soon!

90% of the English bishops thought they could work and dialogue with King Henry VIII, and many pre-WWII German bishops thought they could work with the Nazi's (there are even historical photos showing two German bishops at a gathering of Nazi officials giving the Hitler salute). However, we saw what happened historically and conclude with the question: can one really compromise or dialogue with evil? It would be different if Archbishop Dolan showed up to the dinner and in his opening speech, gave a vociferous denouncement of the President's blatant anti-life policies. But, I suspect that will not be the case at this year’s Al Smith dinner soiree.
