Fears Grow for Sinead in Pope Threat
SINEAD O'Connor sparked widespread anger today after suggesting she would shoot the Pope.
The controversial singer warned of a "f ***in bloodbath" if Pope Benedict was to visit Ireland. The threat is the latest in a string of comments made by the troubled singer on the internet which have led to concerns among friends over her state of mind.
Reacting to a radio poll on a potential visit by the Pope, O'Connor – who caused worldwide fury in 1992 when she ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul on US television – warned that there would be a "f **kin bloodbath". "'Young people of Ireland I love u' said Sinead as she pulled the f ***ing trigger," the singer wrote on Twitter.
"There'd be a f**kin bloodbath. Me meet the f **ker off the plane myself," she added. One senior bishop today described the comment as "extreme" and pleaded for "those around Sinead to help her."
The comments have again led friends of the singer to raise concerns about her mental state.
