Roman Catholic Biblical Scholars Helped Translate the New Common English Bible

USA

Of the 200 biblical scholars and church leaders involved in creating the just released complete Common English Bible translation, 12 are members of the Roman Catholic Church.

Nearly four years in the making, with a total of more than 700 people involved and a budget of $3.5 million, the complete Common English Bible is in its third printing after only one month in stores and is becoming known for being "built on common ground."

"When we say 'built on common ground,' we mean that the Common English Bible is the result of collaboration between opposites: scholars working with average readers; conservatives working with liberals; teens working with retirees; men working with women; many denominations and many ethnicities coming together around the common goal of creating a vibrant and clear translation for 21st century readers, with the ultimate objective of mutually accomplishing God's overall work in the world," says Paul Franklyn, PhD, associate publisher for the Common English Bible. Quite..... one does not translate from the heights of Greek or Hebrew, only to render into substandard English. English is THE language par excellence, on account of its rich historical formation. English is able to hold its own in academic writing, and on the streets; I rather think it a question therefore of maintaining standrads really.

Well it is not something that is everyday ordinary, it is the extraordinary. We need to understand, but we also need to learn. We need to read the Bible on many different levels, spiritually and intellectually, this means we need to change our perceptions, not that of the Word of God. Translations should be as close to the original language as grammar allows. We should not translate the, eg, Greek into English then translate the English into common (peasant) English. It should be left so that we can study the true meaning of what is said because it is close. The KJV is a prime example of these heretics taking hold of bible and making it truly un-understandable! Only Bibles that have the blessings from Rome should be read by Catholics.

Our NABRE translation is probably just as bad as this project....
I will stick with the RSVCE and Douay Rheims...
These dynamic equivalence translations would only be ok with me if they were penned by a saint. Otherwise give me formal equivalence.More

Oh no, it looks like the atheists are onto us. They now have a definite proof of our deception. What to do, what to do?!

SBpfu - Greetings 🤗 .
Absolutely! I remember hearing how my father wooed my mum (on their 25th wedding anniverary.... 😁 )..... The language was amazing, no wonder my Mum had no chance of resisting! 😎 😁 Yet these teenagers dig into the depths of the ghetto like unto the brute beasts of the forest, for 'new' and innovative' ways to speak!! (Mere grunts and murmers really....)More

And the dumbing-down of our glorious language continues, running parallel with the dumbing-down of standards in the Sacred Liturgy. The ordeal continues....... 🥴
PS Interesting that ALL the interviews were with Americans...... What do Americans learn in school, not English? What's the problem with good standard English Language and prose?More
