Wild West Methods? Nuns Accuse Archbishop of Violence

The 18 Carmelite nuns of San Bernardo in Salta, Argentine, have accused local Archbishop Mario Cargnello, 70, and two priests of "gender violence," local media write.

Cargnello is a former Orán Bishop who has been in Salta since 1998. The sisters complain about a "hostile situation" that is going on since 1999. They say that Cargnello's "harassment" against them is "unbearable" and filed a complaint with the Office of Family and Gender Violence in Salta.

April 18, Cargnello appeared with a lawyer in a local court. Until another early May hearing, he is not allowed to come within 300 metres of the monastery.

The dispute is about financial dependencies of the nuns and about 2020 construction work on their convent. Cargnello criticised that the nuns were violating Covid-19 regulations and enclosure requirements, and venerate the unrecognised Our Lady del Cerro.

Cargnello agreed to talk with the nuns but the meeting escalated and he called them “demonesses and traitors.” One of the nuns recorded the meeting on a cell phone. The bishop's secretary snatched the phone. A scuffle ensued.

Cargnello is also under investigation for having spread false abuse allegations against a theology professor who, as a consequence, was dismissed from the university whose grand chancellor Cargnello is.

The monastery was build in 1586. The sisters arrived in 1846. Until John Paul II's 1983 Salta visit the Carmelites lived barefoot. But John Paul II told them to wear shoes.
