Twenty-five women comprising a team of six experts and nineteen auditors will participate in the next Synod of Bishops on the Bible to be held in October in Rome.
With these appointments, this synod, which carries the theme "The Word of
God in the life and mission of the Church ", has the highest
female participation in the history of this Church institution.
Among the experts, mostly professors of Sacred Scripture, are two Italian women, an American, one Spanish, one French and one Nigerian, including American religious Sr. Sara Butler and professors from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Núria Calduch-Benages and Bruna Costacurta. Also in attendance will be Trappist nun Germana Strola from the monastery of Vitorchiano (Italy), Mary Jerome Obiorah, a member of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and Marguerite Lena, of the “St. Francis Xavier” community of consecrated life.
Maria Voce, current president of Focolare, and Hanna-Barbara Gerl-Falkowitz are among the auditors, many of whom are General Superiors of religious orders.
