Leo XIV Appoints Italian Archbishop as Prefect of Congregation of Bishops - First Major Announcement

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Archbishop Filippo Iannone, O. Carm., 67, as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. He will take office on October 15, 2025.

Archbishop Iannone has served as Prefect of the Dicastery for Legislative Texts since 2018. He succeeds Leo XIV himself, who led the Dicastery for Bishops from 2023 to 2025.

Leo XIV also renewed Monsignor Ilson de Jesus Montanari as Secretary and Monsignor Ivan Kovač as Undersecretary for another five-year term.
