How to Keep a Vatican Job? Don't Stand Out

Loup Besmond de Senneville published on La-Croix.com (8 April) tips on how to keep a job in the Roman Curia.

He recalls that according to Francis' Apostolic Constitution "Praedicate Evangelium", which came into force in June 2022, priests and members of religious institutes working in the Roman Curia have a five-year term, which theoretically means that they will have to leave the service from 2027.

De Senneville quotes an anonymous Curia insider who says that "this is [another] opportunity for Francis to get rid of people who no longer fit the bill". So the question for Curia staff is: How can I avoid getting the axe?

The informer of de Senneville knows how: "One has to do everything one can to avoid talking about oneself... but let others speak well of you."

He warns that "there are those who talk too much. Some think they're the Pope's spokesmen, while others start criticising him in public," says the Curia insider: "These people don't survive very long."

Instead of promoting excellence, Francis is perpetuating a culture of mediocrity. This echoes what Aleksander Solzhenitsyn says about Stalin in 'В круге первом' (In the First Circle): "Just as King Midas turned everything into gold, Stalin turned everything into mediocrity."

It is not for nothing that Francis' pontificate has been called the "Stalin era of the Catholic Church".
