Washington Cardinal's Retirement Imminent: Speculation on Successor

Cardinal Wilton Gregory, 77, of Washington, is expected to retire soon, possibly before Trump's January 20 inauguration, PillarCatholic.com reported (December 30).

Archbishop Shelton Fabre, 61, of Louisville, Kentucky, is a possible successor, while Bishop Shawn McKnight, 56, of Jefferson City, Missouri, is the preferred candidate of retired Washington Cardinal Donald Wuerl.

According to PillarCatholic, Wuerl was dispatched by Francis to find a solution to the archdiocesan stalemate. Francis grew frustrated with the lobbying efforts of Cardinals Joseph Tobin of Newark, Blase Cupich of Chicago and Robert McElroy of San Diego. The three were received by Francis in October and lobbied for key American appointments, including Washington.

Cardinal Gregory was named in 2019 following Cardinal Wuerl's retirement amid the McCarrick homosexual scandal. Questions surrounding McCarrick's homosexual network and Cardinal Wuerl's involvement remain unresolved. Gregory has even failed to provide financial transparency regarding McCarrick's archdiocesan fund, reportedly used to distribute substantial gifts to church officials.

The Archdiocese of Washington is also struggling with a multimillion-dollar annual deficit.

What a life eh? Offer mass, meet & greet, a few meetings then lunch. Zoom conference in the afternoon, maybe a short walk, then dinner. Isn’t that his retirement routine?

His predecessor, Wuerl, has I believe, a two million dollar allowance to do that. It's a nice life, if you can get it.

All Saints

Vile creature. I wonder if he was ever Catholic?

P. O'B

Well, he received his father into the Church when the old man was 94.

All Saints

And?

P. O'B

The old guy very likely saved his soul. Score at least one for Wilton.
