The aesthetics of Kingdom of Heaven are so well conceived and executed that they completely overpower the film's modernist subplot. As a result, it is remembered for these qualities, which undermine the tepid modernist messaging shoehorned into an otherwise compelling story. Baldwin's speech itself winks at this phenomenon.
