Nun Accuses Archbishop

Retired Auch Archbishop Maurice Gardès, 78, France, who studied physics before becoming a priest, was reported to the police in August 2020 for allegedly sexually abusing a nun. Since then, Gardès has been under canonical sanctions.

The alleged incident took place around 2009.

Gardès is also accused of harassment, allegedly sending hundreds of text messages of a "violent nature" to several people. As a bishop, Gardès was a strong advocate of ecumenism and inter-religion (FamilleChretienne.fr, 26 April).
