MORGIANA - the story of good and evil in the life of two sisters...

Morgiana

Tragic story of two sisters...good and bad. Evil Viktoria tries to poison her sister Klara with slow doses of poison in order to get the entire large fortune for herself...and she envies Klara and her suitors and love...Viktória only desires property , power and orders. She would only want her husband as an obedient servant who will glorify her and fulfill her wishes at her word. Her heart does not know love, the cold darkness of the night reigns there and the pleasure and mischievousness of evil... Victoria outwardly appears as good, caring...but everything to her is just a pretense and a fake and she is determined to kill her sister with poison from the world, so that she has all the property and power...and to eliminate everyone who stands in the way of her property and power...

The film is a fascinating picture of the struggle between good and evil in the performance of two sisters...and it has something to say even after more than 50 years even to people today. even in this no less famous film...

The priest asks the old lady... and how do you get along with people... I'm fine... my family is fine, my children and my husband. And the others?... I don't talk to my neighbors, they blocked me from my garden... .they are bad people... And your parents and siblings? My parents have already died and I only have a sister. I haven't spoken to her for 10 years, she robbed me of my parents' property. I couldn't take care of them because I was working and was employed.. .I wanted to put them in an old people's home, I would go there for visits and they would be fine there... The nurse took them, she stayed to look after them, but they transferred all her property... house, garden, money... the nurse didn't give me anything ...I feel wronged, we should have split in half...but she grabbed everything by taking care of them. So I don't talk to her or meet her...she is a stranger to me...I don't even know how she lives. ..I told her then that I wouldn't even go to her funeral... But I have no other sins...The priest became sad...And when the parents were still alive, they were self-sufficient, just like how you got along with your sister...Well then...we were great friends, we baptized each other's children, we visited each other...and we had happy...You enjoyed each other because your parents were still alive and the property was not settled...And the property divided you...said the priest sadly...

In the film, Blažková only got a few opportunities in the characters of country girls. She played for the first time during her studies in the film DESIRE (1958), then repeated similar types in other films with a similar tone. Only at the end of the 1960s did she get a more significant role in the main works of our cinematography ALL THE GOOD NATIVES (1968) and SCRIVÁNCI NA NITI (1969). Her last appearance in front of the camera was a role in the TV movie THE BEST MR (1971). Eva Blažková tragically died on vacation in Bulgaria in the summer - August 10, 1971 - shooting the movie Morgiana.

The beach scenes were filmed in Bulgaria. Iva Janžurová in her life role (more precisely, double role) embodies two sisters with completely different personalities. While one-Klára is kind and good, the other Victoria represents evil incarnate, sick hatred and envy. The evil sister decides to eliminate her sibling counterpart, in whom she is unable to bear the qualities she herself lacks. However, her ugliness will soon surprise her, when it takes on unexpected dimensions.

The romantic film about great love and hatred was made by director Juraj Herz in 1972, a year after the extremely successful film Kerosene Lamp (1971). The novella Jessie and Morgiana by the Russian writer Alexander Grin, a master of romantic-exotic stories endowed with fantasy, tension and poetry, served as his model. In a beautiful seaside landscape (the exteriors were filmed on the Black Sea coast in Bulgaria), at the time of the end of the century with an atmosphere of decadence and art nouveau, the story of two sisters - one happy and charming and the other ugly and evil - unfolds, which is a little fairy tale, a little horror , in any case, a drama of romantic characters and emotions, in which, after all the twists and turns, love wins over hate and good wins over evil. Juraj Herz preserved Grin's novella essentially in its original form,

We don't find the cat in Grin's book, but in the film the idea was developed in this way, which the writer noted in the margin of his novella: "Chance lurks in our mind like a black cat in front of the door, against which a foot stumbles in haste, walking with such self-confidence." The film Morgiana won the main prize - the Golden Hugo - at the international film festival in Chicago. in which so many life and death decisions are made. The ugly and envious Viktoria is jealous of her beautiful sister Klára and decides to poison her slowly and discreetly. The artistically and acting-imaginative film was created based on Alexander Grin's novel by Jessie Morgiana. In the film, the name Morgiana has a black cat with a fateful mission... It is a sign of mysterious punishment and a premonition of death...

Evil Victoria hangs herself...

Morgiana is a suggestive story about two sisters, whose symbolic connection is indicated not only by the wonderful double role of Ivy Janžurová - colored in white and black (while this is supplemented by the third mysterious result of both sisters - the figure in red). The art nouveau stylization of the entire film is also original, which is primarily supported by the designer Ester Krumbachová in the form of extravagant costumes. Morgiana has something of the mystery of Gothic horror in it, intoxicated by the decadent atmosphere of the turn of the century.

Morgiana eluded many moviegoers for so long, because it definitely belongs to the top, valuable works of Czechoslovak cinematography. Excellent visual and technical side, especially the costumes, masks and music, a depressing, at times extremely chilly and impressive atmosphere, and especially the great Janžurová in her double role and the no less excellent Nina Divíšková as her opponent.
The mysterious, tragic real fulfillment of the horror story was also the tragic death of the young actress Eva Blažková, who played in the film /drowning in the sea while swimming/...
