The voice of the Church and public debate in France.

On the occasion of Benedict XVI’s visit to France, the French television program “le Jour du Seigneur “, (the Lord's Day), met with French Catholics. Among those interviewed is Christine Boutin , one of the rare French politicians to show her Catholic faith loud and clear, previously as a representative and now as Minister of Housing and the City.

"I have a certain interior joy in showing all Christians that it is possible to be in politics without betraying oneself. And so I say to all Christians: 'Do not be afraid to get involved. It is difficult, it is demanding, you have to take a lot of hits, but in fact, for those who have this charism- it is a political responsibility but also and above all it is a spiritual commitment, not to discount the charism there. I think if we have a number of profound social issues that arise today its because for years the Christians have left the political field, especially in France."

Little by little, the voice of the Church is returning to have a role in the public debate in France, which is not a negative to Christine Boutin:

“I’ve been in politics for almost 30 years, and I’ve been waiting for this speech, (you see I’m still not perfect!) and I think that there must be a message that is more and more clear for the French but also for politicians. It does not mean that they are forced to follow it, but they still need to be informed and enlightened. And the Church is entitled to do so."
