Francis Kissed Hand Of Trappist Monk

During his weekend trip to Morocco, Pope Francis greeted the elderly French Father Jean Pierre Schumacher, by kissing his hand (March 31).

Schumacher belonged to the Trappist monastery in Tibherine, Algeria. In 1996 seven monks of the monastery were murdered. Schumacher could hide himself and survived.

The monk made no attempt to withdraw his hand, quoting, for instance, hygienic reasons.
